In one of our travels to Cagayan de Oro City just last week, together with my family, as commuters like many of us, it was really a very difficult one. One, was the inavailability of Aircon Bus in route to Cagayan de Oro City and its time interval which took us to wait in the Malaybalay Bus Terminal, almost an hour.
Second thing was the extended travel time of more or less one (1) hour in going to Cagayan de Oro City, where we got on the bus at around 7:45 am and touched the Agora Terminal at almost 11 am. The usual travel time to Cagayan de Oro City is 2 hours more or less. But today, it is more or less 3-4 hours from Malaybalay City.
The third worst thing was the road construction which became our travel more agonizing wherein only one (1) lane is usable while the other lane is under road construction or under curing period, in some of the areas only along the Bukidnon road, and the very worst traffic was the road when approaching the Barangay Puerto of Cagayan de Oro City.
Curing period means, hardening period of concrete poured materials to a certain structure which can only be usable beyond 28 days. In this case, it is the hardening period of constructed concrete road. This is not a cemented road. The right term here is concrete road. Another thing here, was some of the contractors were using daytime in their pouring of concrete mix activity with a high temperature (as photo captured below).
The ideal pouring temperature is below 20 degrees Celsius which can only be attained from 4 pm up to early in the morning, until 8 am. Hence, a quality concrete road can also be attained.
By this advisable pouring period, this is also the time when traffic is not heavy, night time.
Today, 9 am, scourging heat can now be felt because of the climate change. Thus, if pouring of concrete happens during this scourging heat period, the quality of our concrete road is surely be compromised.
To the commuters, we will just bear this road inconvenience since this is only temporary in nature. And to the contractors, please use the night time in pouring of concrete mix to attain the required quality of the concrete road. Lastly, as a sort of advise, to the construction administration for Public Works, if we are into road repairs, please do not include roads that are still sound in good condition and please include in your programme of works the road widening in order to provide an emergency pull over area for troubled vehicles or an emergency shoulder.
